Teaching Upstanders and the Holocaust Through Primary Sources: Engaging Students Across Disciplines
Presented by the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum
This interactive virtual session equips social studies educators with TEKS-aligned strategies for teaching Holocaust history and Upstander stories using primary sources and cross-curricular connections. Participants will explore how diaries, photographs, oral histories, government documents, and selected literary excerpts can be used in online or classroom settings to build historical understanding and inquiry skills. The presentation highlights ways to connect digital primary sources, in-person and virtual museum experiences, and interdisciplinary collaboration with ELA, art, and civics. Teachers will leave with ready-to-use activities, discussion prompts, and adaptable resources designed to spark student curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and inspire meaningful engagement with stories of courage, choice, and resistance.
In 2019, Texas Senate Bill 1828 was passed to designate a week for Holocaust education in Texas public schools. Holocaust Remembrance Week will be held January 26 - January 30, 2026 and January 27 is the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Be prepared to engage students during this important week of learning by attending this session.
